Grindhouse Review
A month ago I went and saw Grindhouse at the Astor on limited release for 10 days only. It was shown in it’s true original form with both films back to back, including the fake trailers in between.
The first film Planet Terror, directed by Robert Rodriguez was an action zombie movie with all the guts and gore to match any horror movie of the last decade. Brilliantly acted with a very hardcore B-Grade feel through out the whole film. Pure class. Robert Rodriguez’s ‘trailers’ were quite entertaining as well. My favourite trailer was ‘Machete"
It’s hysterical. ‘Where’s my wife and daughter?!".
Here’s the trailer to Machete
The second film Death Proof, was directed by Quentin Tarantino. An action car chase movie involving girls.
Although it might start off a bit slow with the typical long dialogue sequence that Tarantino is known for, it really kicks some ass when Kurt Russell’s character Stuntman Bob starts to raise some hell against the girls. The Female characters are really likeable and It has one of the best endings of a movie that I’ve seen in a while. Again the b-grade effect is featured all the way through. both films B-grade effects include scratched film, badly edited moments, film jumping, and the cheeky missing reels just when the action starts to get raunchy in both Death Proof and Planet Terror.
This wasn’t just a movie, it was an experience, and to see it at the Astor with it’s original old seats and decor, together with an audience that were wooping, hollering, cheering on the good guys and booing all the bad guys, I’ll never forget it. It’s the best way to see it IMO.
I give it two thumbs up!
The Astor are repeating the screening of Grindhouse some time in June. Don’t miss it!!!
